Every word
has a root.

More than nine in ten words in the Chumash are variations of only 270 root words. Teach a child those roots and the language opens up. Here is what that looks like on the page:

Review

Reviewed in The Times of Israel

Ben Rothke reviews the Gemara workbook in The Times of Israel: how the book paces a beginner through roughly 100 core Talmudic terms, and why he thinks educators would be remiss not to look at it.

Why it works

Rabbi Horowitz made the case for skills-based learning across three columns in Mishpacha in 2007.

  1. It Doesn't Start in Tenth Grade

Imagine being asked to master the Rambam's writings in the original Arabic over ten years. Would you spend the first months learning Arabic, or open the Moreh Nevuchim on day one and hope to pick the language up along the way? Our sons are handed the second plan.

Kids don't drop out in tenth grade. They fall behind in the fifth and sixth grades. And they never catch up.

  2. Training Wheels

Remedial rooms and at-risk yeshivos already teach skills, carefully and patiently, with the right tools. The question this column asks is why a child has to fall first in order to be taught that way.

We seem to be offering our children a significant array of learning assistance and support after some form of educational failure has occurred.

  3. Teaching Our Children to Become Independent Learners

The column that lays out the two roads: teach each pasuk by memory, or teach the structure of the language and let the child assemble the rest. This is where the 270-roots figure at the top of this page comes from.

More than 90 percent of all words that appear in Chumash are variations of only 270 root words.
